Western Sydney's Mitch Nichols cleared to play in A-League Grand Final

Western Sydney playmaker Mitch Nichols faces possible sanctions from Football Federation Australia but is free to play in the A-League Grand Final against Adelaide United on Sunday.

Nichols was at risk of missing the season-decider against Adelaide after being cited by the FFA on Wednesday for his two-finger salute to Brisbane fans following last Sunday's extra-time semifinal win.

But the 26-year-old will not have to enter a submission until 5pm next Wednesday, meaning he'll be allowed to play against Adelaide in the season-decider.

"FFA has sought a response from Nichols in relation to conduct he is alleged to have engaged in after the A-League 2016 semifinal match between Western Sydney Wanderers FC and Brisbane Roar FC on April 24 2016," the governing body said in a statement.

Ex-Brisbane stalwart Nichols, who was off the field at the time, ran 50 metres to deliver the offensive gesture and blow kisses to the Roar fan base on Sunday evening after the Wanderers won the semi 5-4.

He faces a range of sanctions including a reprimand, fine and/or suspension.

The citing comes after the Roar filed a formal complaint against their former long-serving player.

"The club is very disappointed to see the image of a former championship player and the actions he took towards our supporters," Roar CEO David Pourre said.

However, Wanderers defender Scott Jamieson has come out in defence of his teammate, saying Nichols had copped the same abuse from the visiting fan group for the whole match, and instead criticised the Roar for reporting the matter in the first place.

"There was no malice in it of any sort ... it was a bit of banter," he said.

"The Brisbane Roar camp have come out and said a few comments which I don't really see the point in because they're out [of the finals].

"Let it be -- move on."
