Western Sydney Wanderers to call Homebush home in A-League

Western Sydney are eyeing record A-League crowds when they make a temporary shift to Olympic venues ANZ Stadium and Spotless Stadium from next season.

The well-supported Wanderers will split their matches across the Homebush precinct while current home base Pirtek Stadium is demolished to build a larger stadium.

ANZ Stadium will host four marquee matches, including two Sydney derbies next season, when they could set new benchmarks.

The record attendance for an A-League match was set at the 2007 grand final when 55,436 people saw Archie Thompson score five times to win a first championship for Melbourne Victory.

Given ANZ Stadium hosted over 75,000 people for the Asian Cup final, and more than 80,000 for the recent visit of English Premier League club Chelsea, there's plenty of room for Tony Popovic's side to improve the A-League crowd record.

Wanderers chief executive John Tsatsimas said the decision to call the precinct the club's new home during the redevelopment of their Parramatta base came after heavy consultation.

"The overwhelming response from our members was they wanted a central location that has good public transport and access as well as being able to fit in not only our current 18,341 members but also have room to grow," he said.

"Sydney Olympic Park offers two exceptional venues in ANZ Stadium and Spotless Stadium."

The danger will be that the 24,000-capacity Spotless Stadium, with its AFL-sized playing surface, and the cavernous ANZ Stadium do not replicate the frenzied `Wanderland' atmosphere.

Tsatsimas said the club would work to ensure their home grounds maintained a Wanderers feel.

"We look forward to creating an environment at both venues that will retain the atmosphere that has become synonymous with Wanderers matches," he said.

There may be a bit of schedule manoeuvring required given Spotless Stadium is used regularly in December and January for Sydney Thunder's Big Bash League home games, while Greater Western Sydney host some AFL matches there from March.

The Wanderers will play their final game in the current Pirtek Stadium on Friday night against Central Coast, as they push to regain top spot on the table.
