Adelaide go clear at top of A-League, Melbourne City thrash Sydney

Bruce Djite is mobbed after scoring.

Adelaide moved a point clear into first place in the A-League on Saturday with a 4-0 win over the Wellington Phoenix in the New Zealand capital.

Dylan McGowan scored in the 31st minute and Stefan Mauk 10 minutes later to give United a 2-0 lead at half-time. Bruce Djite and Pablo Sanchez added second-half goals for Adelaide, moving United a point ahead of Western Sydney and Brisbane, which are equal on points in second.

Elsewhere, Bruno Fornaroli scored a hat trick as Melbourne City FC hammered Sydney FC 3-0 at home.

Fornaroli opened the scoring in the 41st minute and bagged two more in the final 20 minutes as he completed his hat trick to take Melbourne to within three points of third placed Brisbane Roar.
