Indonesia striker Sergio van Dijk re-joins Adelaide United for ACL playoff

Indonesia striker Sergio van Dijk has re-joined Adelaide United for the A-League club's upcoming AFC Champions League (ACL) campaign.

The 33-year-old qualifies as an Asian import and will be part of the Reds' 23-man squad for the playoff against Shandong Luneng Taishan on Feb. 9.

The winners will go into Group F of the ACL, with Sanfrecce Hiroshima, FC Seoul and Buriram United.

Van Dijk, who has played the last two seasons with Thai Premier League club Suphanburi, scored 28 goals in 61 matches with Adelaide between 2010 and 2012.

"It feels great to be back with Adelaide United, I'm happy that I can play here in South Australia again and I hope I can add something extra to the team and be successful in Asia," van Dijk told the club's official website.

"The style of football that we play has definitely changed since I was here last, but I know I can suit it. I believe the more attacking diversity that we have, the more dangerous we can be in the competition and to our opponents."

Van Dijk was the A-League's leading goal scorer in the 2010-11 season with 16 goals. He also netted 26 times in two years with Brisbane Roar.

The Dutch-born forward could stay at the club beyond this short contract or move on elsewhere within Asia. He is unlikely, however, to return to Suphanburi where he's scored 17 goals in 40 games.

"We are so happy to have Sergio join our team for the Asian Champions League," Adelaide coach Guillermo Amor said.

"He is a player who is big and strong, he is good in the air, but he can strike the ball very well. When Sergio was playing for the club before, he was a very good player and he has shown his abilities while training with us in the last few weeks."

Adelaide's other import players are Isaias, Sergio Cirio, and Marcelo Carrusca.

The Reds, who are sixth in the 10-team A-League, made the Asian Champions League final in 2008 when they lost to Japan's Gamba Osaka.
