Western Sydney Wanderers beat Brisbane Roar to top A-League

Western Sydney Wanderers took over top spot in the A-League by beating Brisbane Roar 2-1 thanks to Mitch Nicholls' late goal on Saturday.

Mark Bridge gave the Wanderers the lead after half an hour, and Jamie Maclaren equalised for Brisbane seven minutes later.

Midfielder Nicholls took a couple of touches outside the box before unleashing a shot that left diving Roar goalkeeper Jamie Young clutching for air, giving Nicholls his fifth goal of the season.

Also, Wellington Phoenix defeated Melbourne Victory 2-0.

Goals by Roy Krishna and Roly Bonevacia in the first half helped to move the Phoenix into sixth place, five points behind the Wanderers.

The Wanderers have a three-point edge over the Melbourne Victory and Sydney FC.

On Friday, third-place Sydney FC beat Newcastle Jets 1-0.

On Sunday, Perth Glory travel to Adelaide United to complete the ninth round.
