Adelaide United and Melbourne Victory share spoils in A-League

Wellington Phoenix stayed top of the Australian A-League after title rivals Adelaide United and Melbourne Victory thrashed out a 2-2 draw.

Both had the chance to take over at the summit but they remained snapping at Wellington's heels.

Melbourne took a ninth-minute lead through Fahid Ben Khalfallah, but hosts Adelaide were level shortly before half-time thanks to Pablo Sanchez and led when Dylan McGowan netted in the 74th minute.

However Australia international Archie Thompson pounced for an equaliser three minutes later as Melbourne inched up to second place, a point behind Wellington, who play Brisbane Roar on Sunday. Adelaide stand a point further back in fourth place.

Newcastle Jets climbed off the foot of the table and left Western Sydney Wanderers there, after winning their tussle 2-1.

Enver Alivodic and Lee Ki-je gave visitors Newcastle a two-goal half-time lead, which the hosts bit into early in the second half through Nick Kalmar's 51st-minute effort, but that marked the end of the scoring as the Jets clung on for just their second win in 22 matches this term.
