Wellington Phoenix rise above Perth Glory, Melbourne City cruise

Wellington Phoenix leapfrogged Perth Glory and went top of the A-League standings for the first time in their history with a 2-1 win in Western Australia.

Roy Krishna put the New Zealanders ahead in the 23rd minute but Glory cancelled out the lead within six minutes as Ruben Zadkovich drew them level.

However, Phoenix were not to be denied and Krishna's ninth league goal of the season sealed a sixth away success for his side to leave them two clear of Glory and Melbourne Victory, who were 3-0 winners over Western Sydney Wanderers on Friday.

In Saturday's other match, Melbourne City thrashed Newcastle Jets 4-0. Kew Jaliens opened the scoring for City in the 18th minute and they pulled clear in the second half with further goals from Harry Novillo (47) and substitutes David Williams (63) and Iain Ramsay (88).

The Jets have won just one of their 21 A-League matches this season and are bottom of the table.
