The race to claim the coveted second spot in the A-League will go into the final round of the regular season after Western Sydney Wanderers were held to a 1-1 draw by premiers Brisbane Roar on Saturday.
The hosts trailed to a 35th-minute goal from Liam Miller, but hit back through Tomi Juric after 61 minutes, leaving the Wanderers in the top two on goal difference only from Central Coast Mariners ahead of next weekend's finale.
The Mariners' own challenge was hit hard by a surprise 3-1 defeat against Perth Glory.
A ninth-minute penalty from Steve McGarry put Perth ahead, although that was cancelled out 10 minutes later by Nicholas Fitzgerald - also from the spot.
However, Morais Sidnei eventually fired the Glory back in front after 71 minutes, with a late own goal from Zachery Anderson adding to the Mariners' woes.
Melbourne Victory are also in the hunt for a top-two spot and a late Mark Milligan penalty earned the Victory a precious point in a 2-2 draw with Newcastle Jets.
Adam Taggart slotted his 15th goal of the season to open the scoring in the 18th minute before Melbourne skipper Milligan equalised just a few minutes later.
However, Newcastle regained the lead from an Adrian Leijer own goal to take the advantage into half-time.
Newcastle then controlled play in the second half, but could not convert a host of chances, and Melbourne made them pay four minutes from time when Archie Thompson was fouled in the box and Milligan converted from the spot.
Melbourne join Adelaide United on 38 points, just one point outside the top two.
