Heart thrash Phoenix, Roar beaten

Jason Hoffman and Rob Wielaert celebrate Melbourne Heart's victory.
Jason Hoffman and Rob Wielaert celebrate Melbourne Heart's victory.

David Williams netted a hat trick as bottom side Melbourne Heart produced an impressive performance to record a 5-0 victory over Wellington Phoenix and close the gap to three points at the bottom of the A-League.

Williams struck his first after Orlando Engelaar had opened the scoring early on, with Phoenix goalkeeper unfortunate to put the ball into his own net after 54 minutes, a goal sandwiched between Williams' second and third.

Adam Taggart's second-half penalty condemned Brisbane Roar to a 1-0 defeat to Newcastle Jets at Suncorp Stadium on Sunday.

A-League leaders Brisbane came undone against the Jets after Taggart's spot-kick just after the hour mark ended his side's seven-match winless run to move them up a place into eighth.
