Brisbane slip to surprise defeat

Brisbane Roar's advantage at the top of the A-League standings shrank to four points on Saturday night as a late strike gave Adelaide United an upset 2-1 win at Suncorp Stadium and another late goal saw second-placed Western Sydney Warriors edge out Sydney FC 1-0.

Adelaide had already taken a 21st-minute lead through Jeronimo Neumann - scoring the rebound from his own missed penalty -- by the time Brisbane's Diogo Ferreira saw red for a second bookable offence five minutes before half-time.

Goalkeeper Michael Theo could be grateful he had only seen yellow for the foul on Jeronimo which led to the spot-kick.

Brisbane substitute Besart Berisha thought he had nicked a point with a neat equaliser 10 minutes from time but, deep into stoppage time and with Brisbane seeking a winner, Adelaide snatched the points with a swift counter-attack, finished by Jordan Elsey.

The news from Sydney was no better for Brisbane, as the Wanderers took the three points courtesy of an 87th-minute goal from substitute Brendan Santalab, capping a pulsating match which had somehow failed to produce a goal before then.
