Ono inspires Wanderers derby win

Western Sydney Wanderers claimed derby honours by defeating Sydney FC 2-0 through first-half goals from Iacopo La Rocca and Shinji Ono.

Shinji Ono sealed the win for Western Sydney Wanderers.
Shinji Ono sealed the win for Western Sydney Wanderers.

In front of a packed Allianz Stadium crowd, the Wanderers proved too strong for an Alessandro Del Piero-less Sydney as the reigning Premiers picked up their first win of the season.

La Rocco scored the opener early in the match as the Italian took advantage of some slack defending to nod home from an Ono free-kick.

And provider turned scorer 15 minutes later as the former Japan international was the first to a loose ball to lash home the winner.

Meanwhile, Nick Fitzgerald's second-minute strike gave defending champions Central Coast Mariners their first win of the A-League season as they defeated Adelaide United 1-0 on Saturday

The 21-year-old took advantage of some slack Adelaide defence in the opening moments to put his side ahead, and although the Mariners were wasteful after that, they managed to hold on to their slender lead.
