Brisbane snatch late win

Ivan Franjic's injury-time strike handed Brisbane Roar a come-from-behind 2-1 win over Wellington Phoenix in their opening match of the A-League season on Sunday.

Ivan Franjic's injury time goal handed Brisbane an opening round victory.
Brisbane needed a late goal to seal the three points.

Wellington got off to a strong start in front of their home fans, showing little signs that they were missing six of their best players through international duty or injury.

Stein Huysegems opened the scoring 22 minutes in after Ben Sigmund's long ball was nodded down by Michael Boxall in the path of the Belgian, who coolly slotted the ball home.

Franjic had a good chance to equalise just minutes later but his shot, which looked to have Phoenix goalkeeper Jacob Spoonley beaten, was deflected onto the post by Sigmund.

Brisbane emerged from the break more lively and prolific goalscorer Besart Berisha levelled things up just two minutes into the second-half, latching onto Franjic's well-placed cross.

That opened up the game and both sides had their chances to strike a winner, but it wasn't until the 91st minute that Franjic buried the scraps after Thomas Broich's shot ricocheted off the post.

Jeronimo Neumann scored twice as nine-man Adelaide United started their campaign with a 3-1 home win over Perth Glory.

The Argentinian saw his ninth-minute opener quickly cancelled out by Ryo Nagai but restored Adelaide's lead with a goal in the 25th minute.

Glory pushed hard for another equaliser in a bad-tempered second half, in which both Isaias and Nigel Boogard were dismissed for the hosts, but Fabio Ferreira kept the three points on the south coast with a third goal on 64 minutes.
