Matildas striker Sam Kerr wins AFC Women's Player of the Year award

Australia striker Sam Kerr has been named Women's Player of the Year at the AFC Awards 2017 in Bangkok following a standout 12 months for club and country.

The Matildas star, who also made the short list for this year's FIFA award, won in the week that saw her become the first Australia international to score in six consecutive internationals.

Kerr netted a double in Sunday's 5-1 victory over China in Geelong, days after she had scored twice against the same opposition in a 3-0 win in Melbourne.

It was the perfect end to an incredible year in which Kerr has consistently excelled.

She was the outstanding player at the inaugural Tournament of Nations as Australia defeated the hosts and 2015 world champions United States as well as 2014 Asian champions Japan and South American giants Brazil.

Kerr finished top scorer at the tournament, and her four-goal haul included a hat trick against Japan.

In addition to setting records for the national team, Kerr was MVP in the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) in the United States and also ended the season as top scorer with 17 goals for her club Sky Blue FC.

She is now the NWSL's all-time top scorer on 43 goals.

In one particularly impressive performance this year, Kerr single-handedly dragged her side to victory after trailing 3-0 to Seattle Reign at half-time. She struck four times after the break in a game that her side eventually won 5-4.

While Kerr plays in the United States from April to September, she continues to turn out for Australia's Perth Glory in the W-League. Having come second in the scoring list and in the league table in 2016-17, she will be hoping to go one better when the Grand Final comes around in February.

At the age of just 24, the best is yet to come from Kerr, who made her W-League debut at the age of 15.

After celebrating the award, Kerr will be looking ahead to the 2018 Asian Cup and hoping to go one better than in 2014, when the Matildas came second.

Elsewhere at the AFC Awards, Ange Postecoglou, who recently quit as head coach of Australia men's national team, lost out in the Coach of the Year category to Urawa Red Diamonds boss Takafumi Hori.
