Matildas star Sam Kerr wants to improve finishing after winning award

Opposing defenders may disagree, but award-winning Matildas' forward and prolific scorer Sam Kerr still believes her finishing isn't up to scratch.

Kerr won the top gong at Wednesday's Women's Health Women in Sport awards in Sydney.

Winning the sportswoman of the year award, ahead of four world champions and an Olympic gold medallist, underscored the rise of the 24-year-old Matildas' striker, who has scored seven goals in her past four internationals.

"I'm scoring a lot of goals but I still don't think my finishing is up to par.I could be better," Kerr said.

"I could incorporate people into the game a lot more, so I'm really excited about the improvement.

"I love playing the game and watching the game, so I've still got a lot to learn."

The Matildas were also recognised at Wednesday's awards, winning team of the year.

"To win the team award is more important to me, because I play a team sport," Kerr said.

The Matildas, who have designs on becoming world No.1, have enjoyed a surge in recognition after winning the prestigious Tournament of Nations and beating Brazil in a two-match home series.

Kerr never envisaged 2017 would turn out the way it has for the Matildas.

"Not really, we didn't know we had that many games coming up... the Tournament of Nations was a maybe," she said.

"The girls have really put in a lot of work and we're really proud of our efforts.

"But we still think we have a long way to go, so that's the most exciting part."

The domestic W-League starts on Oct. 27 and the Matildas play China in two internationals in Victoria next month.

The Matildas contest the 2019 Asian Cup next April.

Kerr scored a goal in Australia's win in the 2010 final as a 16-year-old.

"That's a really important tournament for us, not only to reclaim our Asian championship, but also to be seeded at the World Cup," Kerr said.

"You want to go in as a seeded team... it gives you a massive advantage in the World Cup.

"We want to go higher in the rankings. We're six at the moment, but we want to be No.1."
