Jess Fishlock brace powers City to Melbourne Derby win in W-League

Jess Fishlock has ensured Melbourne City once again sit on top of the W-League ladder, scoring a second-half double in their 3-0 derby success over Melbourne Victory.

Fishlock's brace sandwiched a fine Steph Catley goal, ensuring a 15th straight league win for City was masterminded by the ex-Victory pair.

For an hour, the underdogs in navy blue held firm against their all-conquering opponents but a defensive mix-up did them in.

American defender Samantha Johnson was well placed to deal with Marianna Tabain's 64th minute cross, but ducked out of the way when goalkeeper Bianca Henninger called for the ball.

Fishlock seized on the muddle, bundling home a volley to get City's ball rolling.

With Henninger off with an injury, substitute keeper Bethany Mason-Jones conceded twice in her first 10 minutes of W-League action.

Catley received silver service from Tabain, striking past the teenage goalkeeper from 10 yards before Fishlock popped up again to score after a one-two with Melina Ayres.

The final result was tough on Victory, who battled admirably and could easily have opened the scoring after fine chances fell to Natasha Dowie without success.

A sparkling Lydia Williams was equal to the England international's efforts, while Teigan Allen also produced a fine display from right-back at AAMI Park in front of 1,943 fans.

City are two points clear of Brisbane Roar, which disposed of Western Sydney 2-0 in Sydney on Saturday.

Matildas captain Clare Polkinghorne and fellow international Tameka Butt scored first-half goals to keep the Roar on track of emulating last year's finals appearance.

Fellow heavyweights Canberra United also ran up a score on Saturday, earning a second-straight win with a 5-2 home thumping of the Newcastle Jets.

Michelle Heyman hit a brace while teenagers Grace Maher and Nickoletta Flannery joined Stephanie Ochs on the scoresheet.

Jets pair Rhali Dobson and Emma Stanbury fired consolations.
