Sydney FC remain upbeat despite losing start to W-League season

Sydney FC star Kyah Simon isn't fussed by the team's losing start to the W-League season, and is banking on the local derby to jumpstart their campaign.

The Sky Blues lost their season opener to the Brisbane Roar 2-1 last Saturday, blowing an early lead netted by Matildas striker Caitlin Foord.

However Simon was quick to point out how the club conceded nine unanswered goals to kick off their 2015-16 season with back-to-back defeats.

"Last year we got off to a similar bad start and we were able to go the whole way into the finals," Simon said.

"I think it's definitely finishing our chances, tidying up a few things defensively and really building on the result from last week."

It was a 2-1 win against rivals Western Sydney Wanderers in round three last year that sparked a winning run and resulted in their grand final loss to Melbourne City.

The Wanderers also lost their first game of the season against Perth Glory 4-2 despite fighting back from two goals down to level the game.

The local derby will be the first match in a doubleheader at Allianz Stadium on Sunday, followed by Sydney FC's A-League match-up against Perth.

"I think the more double-headers throughout the W-League and A-League is going to be positive for the game," Simon said.

"It gives exposure to both codes and both male and female football in the country. It allows spectators to witness both, so I think it's a great opportunity.

"For us as players as well, the bigger the environment and atmosphere, the more that we strive off."
