SYDNEY -- Football Federation Australia chairman Frank Lowy has had brain surgery for a blood clot that is thought to have arisen from his fall from the podium during the trophy presentation ceremony at the A-League grand final in May. The 84-year-old billionaire got back to his feet and completed the presentation in Melbourne on May 17, with images of his fall widely broadcast and published in Australia and abroad. Shopping mall operator Westfield Corporation issued a statement Tuesday saying Lowy, its chairman, "underwent a surgical procedure to correct a complication most likely from his fall during the presentation." Westfield said Lowy began feeling unwell while holidaying last week in Europe and had surgery after a medical examination revealed "a subdural haematoma which is not uncommon following trauma to the head." The statement said Lowy would return to Australia following a short convalescence. "Medical reports indicate that he will make a full and speedy recovery and we look forward to seeing the chairman back home soon," FFA chief executive David Gallop said. Lowy, who has been one of the driving forces in the rebuilding of Australia's football association and domestic league over the past decade, is due to retire from the FFA board in November.
