Atletico Madrid's Antoine Griezmann out of Real Betis game with injury

Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann will miss Sunday's La Liga trip to Real Betis with a hamstring injury suffered in Tuesday's 1-1 Champions League draw at Chelsea.

Griezmann, who completed the 90 minutes at Stamford Bridge as the 2014 and 2016 Champions League finalists crashed out of the competition, was left out Atletico's squad on Saturday after he failed to recover from the injury.

Atletico boss Diego Simeone, who has said that "it's clear that no other player on our team has the characteristics of Griezmann," can pick from Kevin Gameiro, Fernando Torres, Angel Correa and Luciano Vietto in attack.

Griezmann had undergone tests on returning to Madrid from the Chelsea game and his club then confirmed the injury, which AS reported would keep him sidelined for about a week.

"Griezmann underwent some medical exams to understand the severity of the injury," a club statement read. "The reason for the exams were to understand what was causing the discomfort in Griezmann's right hamstring. Our diagnosis is pending evolution."

Atletico went into the weekend in third place in La Liga, six points behind current leaders Barcelona and just one off second-placed Valencia.

Betis sit 10th in the table and have recently faded after a good start to the season under new coach Quique Setien, which included a 1-0 win at Real Madrid.

AS has reported that Setien is under pressure after five games without a win in La Liga as well as a Copa del Rey exit to Segunda side Cadiz.

Information from the Associated Press was used in this report.
