Antoine Griezmann happy to end Atletico goal drought in Roma win

Atletico Madrid match-winner Antoine Griezmann was relieved to finally help his team after his goal and assist kept Atleti's Champions League progression hopes alive in Wednesday's 2-0 home win over Roma.

Atletico needed a victory to avoid elimination and seemed headed out of the competition until Griezmann leapt acrobatically to convert Angel Correa's cross with 20 minutes remaining, and then laid on the assist for substitute Kevin Gameiro to tie up the three points late on.

Speaking to BeIN Sports on the final whistle the 26-year-old said he was happy to have been able to contribute and knew he could still improve his form.

"I am happy for the goal, for my teammates, this is how I help them," Griezmann said. "I hope we can improve, me the first. I try and give my best in each game. Now to keep working."

The France international scored for his country against Wales during the recent international break, but admitted to anxiety as his run without a goal at club level had clocked past 750 minutes, a spell which had also seen him whistled by rojiblanco fans upset with his apparent flirting with other clubs.

"The ball was just not going in," Griezmann said. "I tried to do as well as possible in training and with my national team, but..."

The 2014 and 2016 UCL finalists now go to already qualified Chelsea on Dec. 5 needing to win, and hope Qarabag can frustrate Roma in the group's other final game, as the Azerbaijani outsiders already have done twice to Atletico.

"We will keep trying until the end," Griezmann said. "We knew it was important to win today, and then see what would happen. We have one nice game left to play in a nice stadium. We will go there to win."
