Atletico Madrid's Diego Godin handed three-match La Liga ban

Atletico Madrid defender Diego Godin is set to miss the remainder of the La Liga season after being banned for three games for telling the match officials to "put on some glasses" as he was sent off late in Saturday's 1-0 home win over Eibar.

With Atletico hanging on for victory following Saul Niguez's second-half goal, Godin was booked in the 88th minute for arguing with a linesman over the awarding of a corner to the visitors. The Uruguayan then took the row to the fourth official and was shown a second yellow for making a "put on some glasses" gesture, before telling the officials "you are very bad" as he left the field, according to to the official match report from referee David Fernandez Borbalan.

The RFEF's disciplinary committee has decided to hand Godin a three-game ban for the offence, ruling him out of Sunday's trip to Real Betis and then the following weekend's game at home against Athletic Bilbao, which will be Atletico's final game in the Estadio Vicente Calderon.

Barring an appeal from Atletico, the punishment is to stretch into next season, meaning Godin will the first fixture of the 2017-18 campaign, which is potentially Atletico's debut at the Wanda Metropolitano stadium, should the club's new home be ready in time.

The three points against Eibar mean Atletico have already assured themselves of a top-four finish this term, and they need just one point from their final two games to confirm third place and automatic Champions League football next year.
