Atletico Madrid want to host 2019 Champions League final - Cerezo

Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo said he is confident that the 2019 Champions League final will be held at his club's new Wanda Metropolitano stadium, and he hopes the team will be playing in the game too.

In February confirmed that the Wanda Metropolitano, Atletico's home from next season, was contending alongside Baku's Olympic Stadium to stage club football's biggest showpiece occasion in two years' time, with the decision to be made in September 2017.

Speaking in Marca, the Colchoneros president said he was looking forward to his club hosting the final less than two years after completing their move this summer from their old Estadio Vicente Calderon ground.

"We have asked UEFA for a Champions League final, and I believe they will give it to us," Cerezo said. "Within two seasons we will be able to see a Champions League final there, and hopefully with our team playing in it."

This new rivalry between Atletico and the Azerbaijan follows from a previous commercial agreement between the La Liga club and the Azerbaijan government, which saw Atletico's players wear jerseys with the "Azerbaijan -- Land of Fire" slogan between January 2013 up to the 2014 Champions League final.

That deal was worth a reported €12 million and saw Diego Simeone's team visit for a friendly in May 2013, where they beat an all-star Azerbaijan selection, 3-0.
