Fernando Torres welcomed as he attends Atletico Madrid game

Atletico Madrid striker Fernando Torres has thanked the club's fans for their continued support after he suffered a head injury scare in a game at Deportivo La Coruna.

Torres, 32, missed Atletico's 3-0 home triumph over Valencia on Sunday as a precautionary measure after being discharged from hospital on Friday, where he had spent a night under observation following a collision with a Deportivo player during the 1-1 midweek draw.

Torres watched Sunday's game from the Vicente Calderon stadium stands and the former Spain international received a standing ovation from the crowd during the encounter.

There was also a banner that fans displayed reading: "The Calderon loves you -- strength Torres!"

Former Liverpool and Chelsea striker Torres, who is expected to join his teammates in training on Tuesday, wrote on his Instagram account: "Great result today, I can't wait to return. Thanks for your infinite affection."

The home supporters also honoured the veteran forward, who has scored 116 goals in 344 official appearances for the club since making his debut in May 2001, by chanting his name in a song throughout the match.

Fans then applauded Torres as he left the stadium after the game.

Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann, who scored a brace against Valencia on Sunday, was thrilled to see Torres in the stands.

The striker told the club's official website: "We are very happy that he is here with us. We want him to recover as soon as possible because we need him."

Torres has scored five goals and set up two more in 20 league appearances for Atletico this season. He started in seven of those contests.

Atletico are fourth in La Liga and play at Granada on Saturday before hosting Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League round-of-16 second leg on March 15. The Rojiblancos hold a 4-2 advantage from the opening leg in Germany.
