Atletico Madrid's Jan Oblak undergoes successful shoulder surgery

Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Jan Oblak underwent a successful operation on his shoulder and reportedly could spend three or four months on the sidelines.

Oblak, 23, dislocated his left shoulder while making a save in Atletico's 3-0 La Liga defeat at Villarreal on Monday night, and was immediately replaced by backup Miguel Angel Moya.

Even though the procedure carried out in London was deemed a success, reports in Spain say the Slovenia international will need three or four months to recover, meaning he could return around Atletico's Champions League round-of-16 tie with Bayer Leverkusen in March.

"Jan Oblak has undergone a successful operation of the injury he suffered last Monday in the game against Villarreal," an Atletico club statement said.

"The player suffered an injury in the soft parts of the left shoulder [Bankart's injury] as a consequence of the dislocation."

"The player underwent arthroscopic surgery to the left shoulder to repair the labrum -- with a positive result and stabilisation of the shoulder joint. Oblak was successfully operated on in London's King Edward VII hospital by doctor Andrew Wallace, a specialist in arthroscopic shoulder surgery."
