Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo: No need to panic over poor run

Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo has said there is "no reason to be alarmed" despite the poor run that has seen them fall 12 points behind La Liga leaders Real Madrid.

Monday's 3-0 defeat at Villarreal was Atleti's fourth loss in six league games and saw Diego Simeone's side drop to sixth place.

Captain Gabi has said the team is going through "the most difficult run" of Simeone's reign.

But Cerezo told Cadena Cope: "There is no reason to be frightened or alarmed.

"I believe we have a better team than we had last season, and I've seen in previous campaigns situations where teams that trailed by more points almost went on to win the league."

Cerezo put his team's poor run down to bad luck in front of goal and said: "Against Villarreal, we had three clear chances in 15 minutes of the first half -- but we didn't convert them."

France striker Antoine Griezmann has not scored for Atleti since Oct. 2 but Cerezo said he was confident both he and fellow forward Kevin Gameiro would deliver goals again soon.

"Griezmann is one of the best in the world," he said. "He is just not having luck. Gameiro is a great player and he has perfectly adapted to the team."

Cerezo also said he was not concerned by recent comments made by Simeone that he would like to coach Inter Milan, for whom he played for in the last 1990s, one day.

"The comments made by Cholo regarding Inter should not concern anyone," he added.

"I'm not a fortune teller, but we have a contract with him and we believe that contracts are there to be respected."
