Atletico Madrid announce €3.9m profit as plans for stadium move continue

Atletico Madrid have announced an after tax profit of €3.9 million for 2015-16 and predicted that revenues for 2016-17 would hit €266m.

Atleti have struggled financially for decades but are in a more secure position after sustained success under coach Diego Simeone and the regularising of tax arrears, along with investment from Chinese group Wanda.

The results were announced at a private meeting of shareholders, where the accounts approved by a huge majority.

Chief executive Miguel Angel Gil Marin and president Enrique Cerezo maintain voting control over almost all the club's shares.

"The meeting shareholders of Club Atletico de Madrid has taken place, with members representing 98.29 percent of the shares in attendance," a club statement said.

"The board approved the club's annual accounts for the 2015-16 season, which produced a net profit, after tax, of €3.9m.

"The board... predicted revenues of €266.1m and outgoings of €265.3 million [for 2016-17]."

Meanwhile, Atletico continue to make progress with plans for a move to a new stadium at La Peineta for the start of next season.

Concerns about access, transport links and parking were set to be addressed by Madrid city hall in a public meeting on Thursday.

AS reported that a planning change that would allow Atletico to formally take over private ownership of the publicly-built stadium could also be addressed.

The new venue is a former athletics stadium that is being extensively remodelled and modernised to seat more than 70,000 people.

But the project has been hit by a number of setbacks, while the future of the club's current Vicente Calderon home after a move has yet to be resolved.
