Atletico Madrid's Koke hoping to extend contract with club

Atletico Madrid midfielder Koke says he plans to honour his current contract with the club and would be happy to sit down and talk about an extension.

Koke, 24, is under contract until 2019 and is one of a number of young stars including Antoine Griezmann, Saul Niguez, Jan Oblak and Yannick Carrasco who have committed their futures to Atletico.

Speaking to Goal, the Atletico youth product was asked if he saw himself staying at the club for the long run.

"In theory, yes," Koke said. "I have a contract. It runs until 2019 and so I will fulfil that until 2019. And if the club wants to, we will talk and it will be renewed."

Koke has already won the La Liga title, Copa del Rey and Europa League with Los Colchoneros, and has also played in two Champions League finals, being beaten on both occasions by Real Madrid.

The Vallecas-born player said that despite the 2015-16 season ending in disappointment with his second Champions League final loss, he remained proud of being able to play a part in Atletico's history.

"It was a special campaign," Koke said. "We came close to making history again with Atletico Madrid and for me, becoming part of the history of this club is something that fills me with pride. It's the maximum, something I have always dreamed about."

The influence of coach Diego Simeone is "fundamental" in everything Atletico are achieving, Koke added.

"[Simeone] is fundamental," he said. "Ever since he arrived, he has changed the mentality of everyone. He has always had a positive attitude on a day-to-day basis and that is key for us. We work match by match and I believe that is what has made us get to where we are today."
