Atletico Madrid's Kevin Gameiro backs Antoine Griezmann for Ballon d'Or

Atletico Madrid centre-forward Kevin Gameiro says he hopes to soon be celebrating his club and country teammate Antoine Griezmann winning the 2016 Ballon d'Or.

Griezmann has emerged as a challenger for this year's Ballon d'Or, thanks to his outstanding performances for both Atletico and France, with his burgeoning relationship with Gameiro helping to start the 2016-17 season in excellent form.

Holder Cristiano Ronaldo remains the bookies' favourite to win the 2016 prize, after Real Madrid won last season's Champions League and Portugal beat France in the Euro 2016 final, although the situation has become less clear cut after France Football ended its six-year association with FIFA in September.

Speaking to Marca at the opening of a new Atletico shop on Madrid's Gran Via street, Gameiro was asked about his friend's chances of winning world football's most prestigious individual trophy.

"I hope he gets it," the former Sevilla striker said. "We know it is difficult, but I will help him go for this trophy, and then we can celebrate it together."

Gameiro said he was also hoping to be celebrating some team trophies with Atletico in future too.

"We will keep on our path, going step by step to where we arrive," he said. "I am very happy to be here at Atletico, I want to win trophies here."
