Simeone downplays influence on Griezmann's rise at Atletico Madrid

Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone has refused to claim the plaudits for Antoine Griezmann's rise to stardom at Atletico Madrid.

Since joining Atletico from Real Sociedad in 2014, Griezmann has blossomed into one of the top strikers in European football, scoring more than 49 times for the Madrid giants.

He has already found the back of the net five times in as many matches this season, and has insisted that Simeone is crucial to both him and club.

Griezmann said earlier this season that he feared Simeone was leaving the club in the summer for Paris Saint-Germain, and was only "reassured" after a phone call with the coach.

Despite the French striker's praise for Simeone, the Argentine tactician reckons he is just doing his job.

"I don't feel like Griezmann's mentor, I'm just his coach who helps him as a footballer and as a person," the Atletico coach said ahead of Wednesday's Champions League game with Bayern Munich.

"We're helping an extraordinary footballer reach his full potential and I'm just like any other in achieving that."

Simeone has also urged his players to keep their focus for the big game, especially with Carlo Ancelotti masterminding Bayern's moves on the opposite bench.

"Bayern are a very competitive team. The team is very similar to the one we played a short time ago," he added.

"I have great respect and admiration for Ancelotti, for the person and for the coach he is. Especially for the high level he has always managed to maintain throughout his career."
