Diego Costa's place is with Chelsea - Atletico Madrid chief Enrique Cerezo

Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo denied that Diego Costa was a target for the club after having spent more than €80 million in this transfer window.

Los Colchoneros in this window have added France forward Kevin Gameiro, who suffered a thigh strain in training on Wednesday, as well as midfielder Nicolas Gaitan. On Thursday, they sent defender Theo Fernandez on a season-long loan to Alaves.

Costa has been an on-again, off-again rumour for the club. On Wednesday, Chelsea manager Antonio Conte said about his forward: "Diego Costa is a Chelsea player and very happy to stay with us."

Cerezo agreed with Conte in a Thursday interview with Spanish daily Marca, but hinted that the door was always open for the Spain forward.

"Costa [talks] do not have a long tail or anything of the sort," Cerezo said. "Diego has a contract with Chelsea and he belongs to Antonio Conte's team. Chelsea are our friends, just as the great Atletico man Diego Costa is our friend. But his place is with Chelsea and we are sure that he will be successful there. We cherish Diego for what he has given us and he knows where his home is."

Cerezo said he was happy with the team the club have built for the 2016-17 season.

"We have worked closely with [Diego Simeone] to sign players he is in agreement with," he said. "We haven't spent more than we have been able to. But we are done signing players. La Liga will not allow us to sign more, there will be no more signings."

Cerezo agreed that the club's most important acquisition of the summer was Gameiro. The 29-year-old signed from Sevilla on a four-year contract last week for a reported fee of €32 million with add-ons in a deal that also saw Luciano Vietto head to Sevilla on loan.

"Gameiro is the type of player we like to sign," he said of Gameiro, who scored 67 goals and assisted a further 17 during his three campaigns for Sevilla. "From the start, he was our main goal. We are delighted that he is an Atletico player.

"We have a team who can contend in three tournaments. First there is La Liga, which has the best clubs in the world and in which we are among the top three. Then there is Copa [del Rey] and Champions League. We will be in the fight to win everything, which is very difficult, but we have set our main goal as winning the Champions League."

Cerezo said he didn't know whether Simeone had personally asked for the club to add midfielder Nicolas Gaitan from Benfica, who signed this past June on a €25 million deal.

"I don't know whether Gaitain was a specific request of Simeone's, but at this club, the manager's opinion always matters," he said. "Gaitan was one of those players wanted by half of Europe and he played well for Argentina at the Copa America. Last season, he was one of the best visiting players at the Calderon. He will be successful here."
