Tiago signs one-year Atletico Madrid contract extension

Atletico Madrid have handed veteran Portugal midfielder Tiago a one-year contract extension.

Tiago, 35, was absent from November until this month with a leg injury -- making his comeback as a late substitute against Celta Vigo in last weekend's final Primera Division fixture -- but the Champions League finalists have opted to keep him on board at the Vicente Calderon.

Atletico director Jose Luis Caminero told the Primera Division club's official website: "He is a player who gives us a lot of experience on and off the field. That experience is vital to our team."

Tiago moved to Madrid from Juventus in 2010 and has since made 162 league appearances, scoring 16 goals. He has won the Primera Division, Europa League and Copa del Rey with Atletico.

On Atletico's Twitter account, Tiago said: "I am very happy to continue to belong to the Atletico family."

Atletico sports director Jose Luis Perez Caminero added on the club's official website: "His continuity is good news. He is a player who contributes lots of experience on and off the field of play, which makes him beloved by teammates and fans alike. His hierarchy is vital for our team and he is a key pillar of the group."
