Fernando Torres: Test against Bayern important for Atletico Madrid history

Atletico Madrid striker Fernando Torres says he personally wants to write his way into the club's history, ahead of Wednesday's Champions League semifinal at home to Bayern Munich.

Former Atletico youth-teamer Torres has won the Champions League, FA Cup and Europa League with Chelsea, and the Euro 2008, World Cup 2010 and Euro 2012 titles with Spain.

However his only medal during either of his periods with boyhood club Atletico has been the 2001-02 Segunda Division when as a teenager he captained the team through one of the darkest periods in its history.

The now 32-year-old "El Nino" told the pregame news conference at the Estadio Vicente Calderon that his own chance to win a big trophy with Atletico could top everything else he has won in his career.

"I feel very fortunate to have played in great teams, have had unbelievable nights and trophies with Spain," Torres said. "But for me personally, nothing could compare to doing it with Atleti.

"I do not consider myself the badge of the club -- that is the values behind it. We just try to communicate those values on the pitch.

"Being united we know we can lift the fans, make them believe, and tomorrow will be another chance to show them the correct way to win."

Before Torres rejoined the club in January 2015, and since Diego Simeone took charge over Christmas in 2011, Atletico have won trophies in La Liga, Europa League and Copa del Rey .

But they fell short in heartbreaking circumstances when losing the Champions League final to neighbours Real Madrid in 2013. That experience was similar to Atletico's only other European Cup final -- in 1974 when they were 1-0 ahead in extra time but Bayern Munich's Hans-Georg Schwarzenbeck equalised in the final seconds, and the German side won the replay 4-0.

"We want to write a new chapter in the club's history," Torres said. We can do that now. We have a fantastic opportunity -- a huge game against one of the favourites. Now we have in front of us a huge game.

"There is no better way to celebrate the club's 113 years birthday than to play a game like this. We are here to write that new chapter. I hope that within a few weeks we can say we have taken one more step."

Torres famously scored, and was then sent off, in his team's 2-1 first leg defeat in the quarterfinals at Barcelona, so he was then suspended as his teammates won the return leg 2-0 to progress to the last four.

"That game is behind now, thanks to the work of everyone at the club, in the team, we were able to lift the tie, with great work," he said.

"The players, and the fans, will enjoy it, giving everything, as we do in every game. Everyone knows the character of this team -- and tomorrow that will reach the maximum."
