Diego Simeone banks on Fernando Torres' renewed belief at Atletico

Fernando Torres scored his 101st goal for Atletico in the 1-0 win over Getafe on Sunday.

Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone hopes Fernando Torres' winner in their 1-0 win over Getafe will help the Spaniard find a new lease of life at the club.

The former Chelsea and Liverpool striker struck the only goal of the game with only three minutes on the clock to give Atletico a valuable three points in what was his 101st goal for the club.

This is also the first time since last October that the forward has scored in consecutive matches and Simeone believes the 31-year-old will continue his rich vein of goal scoring form in the coming matches.

"He started very well, it was a very quick play in front of the area, with a good finish," the Argentine tactician told Omnisport.

"Goals always strengthen the forwards and hopefully that's the case with Fernando."

Despite a good start, Atletico struggled to find any rhythm for the rest of the game, partly due to an injury to captain Gabi, who orchestrates most of their play midfield.

"It's always hard work against Getafe. They've worked well with the ball, but without creating chances to score," he added.

"The team started well until the injury to Gabi and then lost that consistency.

"In the second half, we didn't have much in attack, we were not ourselves in our pressing or our speed, but it's very positive knowing you suffered.

"It was a huge defensive effort to defend the goal."

With a big home game against Villarreal on Feb. 22, Simeone will be sweating on the fitness of Gabi, along with Belgium attacker Yannick Ferreira Carrasco who came off in the second half with what could be ligament injury.

"After a first examination of our medical services, the Belgian has suffered a sprain of the external lateral ligament of the right ankle joint," the club said in a statement after the game, without confirming how long the winger will be out for.

Atletico sit in second spot behind league leaders Barcelona who trounced CeltaVigo 6-1 on Sunday.
