Atletico boss Diego Simeone confident Jackson Martinez will find goals

Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone has backed misfiring summer signing Jackson Martinez to soon be among the goals.

Jackson joined Atletico for €35 million from Porto last season, but has scored just one goal so far this season, his worst start to a season since he came to Europe in 2011, according to Marca.

Simeone also appears to have doubts about whether Jackson has yet fit into the Atletico way of playing, and the 28-year-old has yet to complete the 90 minutes in any of his first seven games for his new club.

The Colchoneros coach said in his pregame news conference that other big-name attackers -- including recent fans favourites Diego Costa and Radamel Falcao -- had also taken a while to find their feet, and like them Jackson would soon be finding the net regularly in the Atletico colours.

"They are players who arrived just two months ago," Simeone said. "The same thing happened with Costa and Falcao. [David] Villa had already played a long time in Spain. When players come from another championship, and are playing in a different way, they need time to adapt. Falcao, Villa, Adrian, [Fernando] Torres all scored goals -- and Jackson will too."

Youngster Angel Correa has made a much better impression so far this season, and is tipped to start Wednesday's Champions League group game at Benfica. Simeone rejected a question that the teenager had a similar to style to his fellow Argentine and ex-Atletico attacker Sergio Aguero of Manchester City.

"No, they seem different to me," he said. "One is more a pure forward, a number nine, and Angel breaks down the wings, moves between the lines, is improving and we hope that with this improvement the team will have different options. Angel can play in any part of the pitch, as a third forward out wide, or up front if needed. Kun is more a finisher of moves."

Simeone said he expected a tough game against the Portuguese champions on Wednesday night at the Estadio Vicente Calderon.

"It will be a tough game, against an opponent who are used to winning," he said. "They won their league, they have pace on the wings, with [Goncalo] Guedes, with [Nicolas] Gaitan as the reference point of the team. They score goals, counter well, I like their right-back Nelson [Semedo]... They are a competitive team. The game asks for great intensity, and an ability to quickly take the game to the place we want."

Ex-Atletico striker Raul Jimenez, who did not play much under Simeone last season, is just one of a number of former Colchoneros among the Benfica ranks.
