Jackson Martinez's debut in Atletico's win pleases Diego Simeone

Aletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone said he pleased with Jackson Martinez's debut, even though Antoine Griezmann took the spotlight from their new signing in Saturday's 1-0 win over Las Palmas.

Griezmann was on target with the only goal of the match as Atletico Madrid took all three points from their La Liga opener against the newly promoted side.

The Frenchman's shot deflected off a defender to wrong-foot goalkeeper Raul Lizoain, who got a touch on the ball but couldn't keep it out.

Griezmann was Atletico's most incisive player and outshone Atletico's star signing of the summer Martinez, who showed he needs time to adapt to Diego Simeone's side.

Simeone, however, was pleased with what he saw from the former Porto star.

"Jackson did a great job, it's not easy [for defenders] to move him," Simeone said. "We're happy with our first victory at home. Las Palmas played an interesting match and had their opportunities to score."

Simeone also said he was happy with how Atletico controlled the run of play.

"In the second half, we were closer at finishing," he said. "In the first we had a lot of possesion, but less depth and we are pleased with the first win at home, which is always complicated.

"We could connect quite well through the lines and played quite a lot on the opponent's half. I think the first half was played almost entirely on their half.

"We must improve in the depth the team should have, because we are interested in possession, but near goal? We will continue to work on that."

Simeone also singled out 20-year-old midfielder Oliver for praise.

"Good match from the whole team in general, the same of Oliver, who tried to look through the lines and in the first half had a couple of important cases of good connections with Juanfran on the right and with Griezmann.

"It's what we need from him, clarity of game, through game and a pace that will allow us to assist those at the top who are the one that solve the game for us."

"We are pleased with everyone's work. The entrance of Raul was also very important to balance the team and the truth is that we are very happy with the win."
