Atlanta United sets MLS attendance records for single season and game

Atlanta United broke the MLS attendance record in its final regular-season game on Sunday, going past the 800,000 mark in its first year in the league.

United finish the season with 819,404 tickets sold, well above the league's single-season record of 752,199, set by the Seattle Sounders in 2015.

For the second time this year, Atlanta also broke the single-game record on Sunday, as 71,874 fans watched the 2-2 draw against Toronto FC.

Last month, United broke the league record that had stood since 1996 by bringing in 70,245 for the first game with the top deck open at the new Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

The club opened the year by playing nine games at Georgia Tech's Bobby Dodd Stadium before playing its last eight at Mercedes-Benz after it opened in September.

Opening the top deck at the venue it shares with the NFL's Atlanta Falcons also helped United break the MLS average attendance record with 48,200 fans per game.

Atlanta finished its inaugural season in fourth place in the Eastern Conference, becoming the first expansion team to reach the playoffs since the Sounders in 2009.

Sources confirmed to ESPN FC this week that Atlanta will host the All-Star Game in 2018, with a news conference scheduled for Monday.
