Atlanta United FC has sold 40k of 55k seats for regular-season opener

Atlanta United have sold more than 40,000 tickets for the club's first-ever regular season match against the New York Red Bulls on March 5, according to a report in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Club president Darren Eales said that the team is on pace to sell out Georgia Tech's Bobby Dodd Stadium, which can hold 55,000 fans. The venue will serve as Atlanta's home until Mercedes-Benz Stadium is completed this summer.

"We are going to go for it and look to sell it out," Eales told the AJC.

Eales said that the team has sold more than 27,000 season tickets, and that club would institute a soft cap of 30,000, though that could increase if the demand is there.

He added that the MLS expansion franchise is selling more than 100 season tickets a day since Saturday, and that the team had sold more than 10,000 single-game tickets for the opener in a seven-day period starting on Feb. 2.
