Athletic Bilbao Iker Muniain: We need a win to improve confidence

Athletic Bilbao attacker Iker Muniain says he hopes a win in Tuesday's Champions League Group H game at BATE Borisov will bring an upswing in his side's fortunes.

Athletic began their season on a high by eliminating Napoli in the Champions League playoff in late August, but the Basque side have slumped recently -- with no wins and just one goal scored in their last five games in all competitions.

The Pamplona-born youngster told the prematch news conference that there was no need for panic, while admitting a victory would provide a much-needed boost.

"The team is good, looking forward to playing the game, we must 'change the chip' now," Muniain said. "We are not in a good moment in La Liga, but there is no need to get alarmed. Now we must focus on the Champions League. A win would give the team a lot of confidence, and be good for us after our recent games. I hope it comes."

Athletic drew 0-0 with Shakhtar Donetsk in their group opener at San Mames, and coach Ernesto Valverde admitted that he was considering making changes to his team to try and find more of a creative spark.

"I have not decided yet on the starting XI, but I plan to make changes," Valverde said. "We obviously analysed our recent results and our problems scoring goals, which is coming from our inability to create enough chances. We are trying to solve this weakness that comes from midfield. We definitely lack the final ball."

While BATE were hammered 6-0 at FC Porto in their first game, Valverde said he was expecting a difficult challenge given the expected big crowd at the Borisov Arena, and the Belarussian club's experience in this competition.

"I know BATE tend to build from the back," he added. "They are the best club in Belarus, so the game will be demanding. They have good performers in the middle of the park as well as on the flanks, players like Filip Mladenovic. They are decent opposition. Most of all I fear BATE will give their all for the home fans. BATE also have more UEFA Champions League experience."
