Atalanta replace sacked Stefano Colantuono with Edoardo Reja

Stefano Colantuono has been relieved of his duties as coach of Atalanta and replaced by Edoardo Reja.

The Bergamo club have slipped to the brink of Serie A's bottom three and are just three points above the relegation zone after losing their last four matches.

Atalanta are due to travel to bottom-placed Parma at the weekend, and former Napoli and Lazio boss Reja will now be tasked with lifting them to safety.

"Atalanta B.C. announces that coach Stefano Colantuono has been relieved of his duties and will be replaced by Mr Edy Reja," read a statement on Atalanta's official website.

"The club would like to express their profound esteem and gratitude to Mr Colantuono in view of the substantial work performed over the past five years."

Colantuono becomes only the fifth Serie A coach to lose his job this season after Eugenio Corini at Chievo, Walter Mazzarri at Inter Milan, Pierpaolo Bisoli at Cesena and Zdenek Zeman at Cagliari.

Serie A has helped shed its reputation for a lack of patience when it comes to managerial changes this season, with a new league record being set when only four swaps had taken place after 22 games -- beating the previous record low of six in the 2008-09 campaign.

Reja's previous job was at Lazio towards the end of last season as a replacement for Vladimir Petkovic. He was unable to guide the club into Europe in his five months in charge and left in the summer to be replaced by Stefano Pioli.
