Stiliyan Petrov back in Aston Villa training as he bids to make comeback

Stiliyan Petrov has returned to training with Aston Villa four years after being diagnosed with leukaemia.

Petrov, 36, is in remission after his battle with acute leukaemia and announced in April that he was planning to make a playing comeback.

New Villa manager Roberto Di Matteo has given his blessing for the former captain to join the squad at their training camp in Austria, and he was seen at the club's training base on Wednesday ahead of his first session with team.

Petrov initially retired in 2013 following his cancer diagnosis in 2012, but had been training with Villa's under-21 side ahead of a comeback.

The midfielder joined the Midlands club from Celtic in 2006, going on to make 219 appearances and score 12 goals.
