Tim Sherwood says he'll 'try anything' to save Aston Villa from relegation

Aston Villa manager Tim Sherwood said he will "try anything" to steer the club clear of relegation from the Premier League following his side's narrow victory against rivals West Brom.

Christian Benteke's last-gasp penalty gave Sherwood his first victory and moved Villa out of the bottom three as they beat West Brom 2-1 at Villa Park on Tuesday.

And, asked if this could be a turning point in Villa's season, Sherwood is quoted by the BBC as saying: "I think so. We have conceded late against Stoke and it is a real body blow, but to score one late is an excellent feeling and I thought it was thoroughly deserved.

"We are improving every game and we are still alive and kicking. It's a massive football club and it is at the wrong end of the table.

"A Tony Pulis side is never dead. It was always likely to be a set piece. We kept at it and someone was looking down on us today. I'll try anything, we are at that stage.

"We hadn't won in 12 Premier League games and had to buck that trend. I think we deserved the three points and onwards and upwards.

"When you are at the bottom you have to grind out results, but today we showed by playing them ... it was a great improvement.

"I don't think we can do it the old-fashioned way with blood and thunder. We have to play through teams."

Sherwood had so far overseen two defeats during his time in charge of Aston Villa but said he saw a much better performance from his side on Tuesday.

He said: "I think the last two games we haven't got what we deserved. We haven't been fantastic but I've seen a vast improvement there, especially in our first-half performance.

"I think against Newcastle we got a bit too edgy far too early, started kicking the ball back to front far too early. But after West Brom scored I wanted to play through the thirds, getting the midfield players on the ball and a little bit more rotation."

Sherwood praised the fans for a great atmosphere at Villa Park, adding: "It's important the guys go and spark the crowd and I think we did that early by our pressing without the ball. We weren't rushing, we were patient, and there was a good mixture to it and we gave the fans something to cheer about.

"It's a big football club and it's at the wrong end of the division.

"The boys gave the Villa fans something to cheer about tonight and they were fantastic and they stuck with us, even when we got pegged back."
