Ron Vlaar: I've spoken to boss about extending Aston Villa contract

Aston Villa captain Ron Vlaar has said that he and manager Paul Lambert have spoken about extending his contract at Villa Park.

Netherlands international Vlaar is out of contract in the summer, and speculation has linked him with a move to either Southampton or Manchester United.

But the 29-year-old brushed aside rumours that he could move in January and said he believed Villa had given themselves something to build on after ending a run of five Premier League defeats with a 0-0 draw at West Ham on Saturday.

"I have nothing to say because there is nothing going on," the Birmingham Mail quoted him as saying. "I have spoken to the gaffer a few times [about a new deal], but that is it so far."

Vlaar hailed his teammates for the "determination" they had shown at Upton Park, where they recovered from a difficult start to hold the in-form hosts.

"We know we needed to change something, and it was a positive result for us," he said. "We can't think that we are not good enough to do that, and that is a good start."
