Paul Lambert praises 'outstanding' Aston Villa after win at Liverpool

Aston Villa boss Paul Lambert labelled his side's "outstanding" defending at Liverpool and thought they were thoroughly deserved the 1-0 win which sees them move up to second in the Premier League.

With Daniel Sturridge injured and Raheem Sterling only appearing as a second-half substitute for the hosts, Gabriel Agbonlahor scored with the visitors' only shot on target to leave Anfield with all three points for the second time in three years -- and Lambert was thrilled with how his side stifled Brendan Rodgers' side.

"I thought the lads thoroughly deserved it. The first half we were outstanding, I thought we could have had a couple more," he told reporters.

"Second half we had to weather a storm but as a group, from Gabby right back to [goalkeeper Brad] Guzan, defensively we were outstanding."

- We aimed to frustrate Liverpool, says Agbonlahor

Unbeaten Villa have now won three of their opening four league fixtures, and Lambert hopes the run can continue.

"Football sometimes has a really bad habit of kicking you somewhere, but you just keep going," he added. "There's no magic formula, the lads have got a great bit of belief and they've got a great desire to win games."
