Francesco Totti signs one-year Roma contract extension

Francesco Totti has signed a one-year extension to his Roma contract, the Serie A club have announced.

Totti, who turns 40 on Sept. 27, will enter into his 25th season before taking on a new, as yet unconfirmed role within the club.

"I really wanted this contract, it represents the realisation of my dream," Totti told asroma.com. "I always wanted to end my career having only worn one shirt -- the Roma one. After speaking with the president, I am even more convinced that, working together, we can achieve great things."

The 39-year-old appeared set to retire this summer when a mixture of injuries and technical choices forced him to miss much of the first half of the season. However, he made an impact late on with several impressive substitute appearances, earning a new one-year deal.

"It's a fantastic feeling,'' Totti said. "Obviously at the start of the season people draw up their predictions and it all looks very simple. We're aiming as high as possible, though we know that there is a team stronger than everyone in Juventus.

"That said, when I spoke to the president today he guaranteed that he will build a great Roma side and I told him that at least I will have the chance of winning a second Scudetto.''

Totti has made a club record 758 appearances for the Giallorossi and scored a club record 304 goals, five of them coming last season.

"It's quite fitting that on the anniversary of the day AS Roma was founded, Francesco Totti has signed a new playing contract," said AS Roma president James Pallotta. "No one has played more games or scored more goals for this football club than Francesco Totti and we're delighted that he will continue for one more season.

"He's earned this contract and now we want Francesco's final season on the pitch to be the start of a new era of success for AS Roma."
