Rumours that Totti will play for Roma for free are an insult - James Pallotta

Roma president James Pallotta has rubbished rumours that he has accepted a request by Francesco Totti to play for free next season.

Totti's contract is up for renewal in the summer, but he has yet to be offered a new deal.

And it has been claimed in Italy that Totti had recently offered to play for free in a bid to secure a playing contract for another year -- like the current president of the Italian Professional Footballer's Association (AIC) Damiano Tommasi did in his final season with the Giallorossi.

"It's not true," Pallotta told La Repubblica. "This is an insult to one of the greatest players of all time."

Pallotta's recent trip to Rome failed to resolve the future of the Roma captain, who celebrated 23 years as a professional earlier this week.

And the club president was recently filmed at a conference in Boston suggesting that Totti should consider retiring at the end of the current season, rather than seeking another contract.

The 39-year-old has made just six appearances in Serie A this season, scoring one goal.
