Roma did not deserve defeat against Sampdoria - Rudi Garcia

Roma coach Rudi Garcia felt his side deserved more than they got after the Giallorossi slumped to their first Serie A defeat of the season at Sampdoria on Wednesday.

A late own goal from Roma defender Kostas Manolas handed Samp a 2-1 victory at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris.

"When it was 1-1 we felt that we deserved more, so imagine after a defeat,'' Garcia said to the Italian TV channel Mediaset. "We conceded two goals from Sassuolo at the weekend and two tonight from Sampdoria. You can't win games like this.''

Even so, Garcia felt his team could -- and should -- have won against the Genoa-based club.

A Citadin Eder free kick had put the hosts in front, but Roma pulled level with a goal from Mohamed Salah.

"It's a defeat that we did not deserve and I liked the way the team played overall, but it was also our own fault for little defensive errors and the failure to convert our scoring opportunities,'' Garcia said. "We made two or three mistakes that cost us dearly.''

The reverse in Genoa has dropped the capital club to ninth in the standings, seven points adrift of league leaders Inter Milan.

Inter won 1-0 against Hellas Verona for their fifth win in as many games.

Roma, who finished second behind Juventus last term, were held to a 2-2 draw against Sassuolo at the weekend and have won just two of their five league games.

They host Carpi on Saturday before returning to Champions League action at BATE Borisov on Tuesday.

"It's a difficult moment, but if we continue to play like this, we will win many games in future,'' Garcia said. "We were in control and conceded right as we were putting on the most pressure.

"Now we must look ahead. Against Carpi on Saturday we need to be ready and prove that we have learned from the mistakes we made against Samp.

"We need to make the most of our chances, score more goals, because we are in need of a victory.''
