Roma's Wojciech Szczesny out for up to six weeks with finger injury

Roma goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny faces up to six weeks on the sidelines after suffering a ligament strain to the finger during Wednesday's 1-1 Champions League draw against Barcelona.

Szczesny, 25, on a season-long loan deal from Arsenal, was forced off five minutes into the second half in the Group E opener at the Stadio Olimpico after clashing with Barca striker Luis Suarez.

A statement from the Italian club on Thursday read: "Tests have confirmed that Polish goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny did not sustain a fracture to the fourth finger of his left hand against Barcelona last night, despite having to come off injured in the second half after a clash with Luis Suarez.

"This morning's tests did reveal that Szczesny, who is on loan from Arsenal and has started all four of Roma's competitive games this season, suffered a ligament strain to the finger.

"It is estimated that Szczesny, who has so far made 23 appearances for the Polish national side, will be out for between four and six weeks.''

Suarez had given Luis Enrique's side a 21st-minute lead, only for Roma to equalise eight minutes later with a wonder goal from Alessandro Florenzi.

The injury will rule Szczesny out of Poland's final two European Championship qualifiers against Scotland and Republic of Ireland, with Lukasz Fabianski likely to maintain his starting role.
