Roma's Miralem Pjanic to be absent for Barcelona meeting due to injury

Roma will have to do without Miralem Pjanic for their opening Champions League clash with Barcelona next Wednesday after he was ruled out for up to three weeks with a calf strain.

Pjanic, 25, picked up the injury while on international duty for Bosnia-Herzegovina with the precise diagnosis given on his return to the Serie A club on Tuesday.

The midfielder has "suffered a first-degree calf strain," a statement on the Serie A club's website said.

"The Bosnian picked up the injury in the first half of his national side's 3-0 Euro 2016 qualifying win over Andorra on Sunday night.

"The influential midfielder, who scored the opening goal in Roma's recent 2-1 victory over Juventus, has already begun a rehabilitation program and his condition will be assessed over the coming days."

He will definitely miss the weekend's trip to Frosinone as well as the visit of Barcelona to the Stadio Olimpico, while he is not expected to return until the Giallorossi face Carpi on Sept. 26, meaning he will also miss league games against Sassuolo and Sampdoria.

He could be back for Roma's trip to BATE Borisov in the Champions League on Sept. 29.

Pjanic has been influential in Roma's first two games of the season, scoring in the 2-1 win over Juventus last time out.
