Kevin Strootman operation could rule Roma star out for months - reports

Roma midfielder Kevin Strootman is set to undergo surgery for the third time in a bid to bring an end to almost 18 months of injury frustration, according to reports.

Strootman, 25, first underwent surgery on his left knee in March 2014, ruling him out almost for a year since his recovery did not go according to plan and a second intervention was deemed necessary in January 2015, after his attempted comeback lasted only two months and saw him take to the field just seven times.

He had hoped to be back in action during preseason in a bid to make a more sustained return to action this season, but during the Giallorossi's trip to Australia concerns over his condition were raised.

Upon returning to Italy, follow-up tests with various specialists saw him spending more time in clinics than out on the training field, leading to a diagnosis that a third operation is required.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the Dutchman has been taking in all he has heard over the past few weeks before making a final decision.

An operation which would rule him out for at least half of the season, if not all of it, considering a two-stage intervention may be the only way to reconstruct the damaged cruciate ligament, seems to be his most likely choice.

The former Manchester United target has played just seven times in Serie A since March 2014, only twice over the full 90 minutes.
