More sanctions for Roma after chanting

Almost three quarters of the Stadio Olimpico will be closed when Roma host Inter Milan on March 1 due to further sanctions imposed by the Lega Serie A for geographical discrimination.

The two Curvas were shut down for the 3-0 win over Sampdoria at the weekend as punishment for discriminatory chants heard during the Coppa Italia clash with Napoli. Those chants were repeated, however, by fans occupying the southern part of the main stand, which has now also been closed for Roma's next Serie A fixture.

The two Curvas are also to remain closed for one more match, meaning the capacity will be greatly reduced when the Nerazzurri arrive.

While the rules and their enforcement continue to be the subject of intense discussion and criticism, Roma captain Francesco Totti has called on his club's fans to obey them in future, saying their support will be necessary as the season reaches its conclusion.

"Roma are playing a great season and we've still got a lot to play for and we as a team still really believe in our chances [of winning the Scudetto]," he wrote on his own blog. "But we need the support of our fantastic fans. Playing with the Curvas empty is not the same thing and it felt strange on Sunday, even sitting in the stands myself.

"I hope that the fans will not compromise the possibility of being close to us between now and the end of the season."

Roma have announced that they will appeal the Lega Serie A's latest sanctions in a bid to have more of the stadium opened for the visit of the Nerazzurri -- an important game in terms of European qualification.

The Eternal City club have also been fined 80,000 euros for the misconduct of their supporters during the 3-0 win over Sampdoria.
