Zeman points finger at Stekelenburg

Roma manager Zdenek Zeman has hit back at Maarten Stekelenburg, following the goalkeeper’s recent criticism of him.

Stekelenburg, 30, launched a bitter tirade against his coach earlier this week, claiming the signing of fellow goalkeeper Mauro Goicoechea in the summer was "totally pointless". The Netherlands international has lost his place in the team to Goicoechea this season but says that Zeman has never explained the reasoning for that decision.

However, the Roma boss has now spoken out on the matter, saying that he feels the former Ajax man is the one in the wrong.

"I think it was an inopportune interview with many things he got wrong," Zeman said. "He is still a Roma player and must be at the disposal of Roma. Don’t forget after the Parma game he was injured for a month.

"Unfortunately when there is a lack of discipline, there is a lack of team spirit. It is difficult to work at Roma, especially as journalists tend to write about incidents that occur behind closed doors.

"We’ve got no rules at the moment and every now and then something happens that shouldn’t. I am a coach for them, not them for me. I asked Stekelenburg to be more involved with the team, as he lives in an isolated manner and only speaks English which not many of his team-mates do."

Stekelenburg has been widely linked with Premier League club Fulham in recent weeks and this latest disagreement may well see a potential transfer forced through.
